Stay Focus

25 07 2007

During the World Vision’s 30-Hour Famine Camp Volunteers’ training, we were told this brief story:

A taxi arrived at the front of a train station and three men hurried down from the car. As they rushed up to the train’s platform where the train was waiting, the train’s engine went “chu-chu” signaling that it was about to depart. But before the three men could reach the train, the train had started moving. And so the three men gave chase. They ran and ran along the long platform till two of them managed to jump into the train through the last door. Exasperated and tired of running, the third man stopped chasing and stood there cursing as he catches his breath. He could not help but to curse his two friends. He cursed and cursed and cursed for about 3 minutes when suddenly he burst out laughing. “HAHAHA!” he went. As the people around him stared at his peculiarity, with tears of laughter in his eyes, he had this to say: “Those two jokers were supposed to come and see me off! Instead, they went off with the train! Idiots! &^(#^#\”.

Moral of the story: It’s easy to lose focus when there’s so much going on around us. Nevertheless, no matter how busy or distracted we are, we should never forget our task at hand. Stay focus despite the commotions/excitements.

Your Weekend, Their life…

21 07 2007

When was the last time you were so hungry you ate a rotten banana?
When was the last time you worked your ass off just to buy rats to cook for dinner?
When was the last time you were so thirsty you drank the water from the stream despite it being flooded with Guinea worms?

To every question above, I bet your answer would be ‘Never‘.

And by saying ‘Never‘, you are luckier than more than 850 million people around the world who are living in poverty each and every second of their lives.

For that 850 million people, eating a rotten banana and drinking water with Guinea worm lava in it scarcely explains what they go through to only barely survive each day. A Guinea worm lava could last up to 1 year in a human’s stomach, after which it will crawl down to a person’s leg or feet and form a lump. The worm will then try to find its way out of the person’s leg and will eventually tear through the person’s skin. The pain from the burst of the skin due to the ‘activity’ of the worm is unimaginable. Yet, the children in Africa drinks the water because it’s their only source of water. 4,500 children die each day from unsafe drinking water. How can you help?

Today, I attended the volunteer’s training for World Vision’s 30-Hour Famine Camp to be held on 15-16 Sept 2007. 700 volunteers rendered their support, time and energy to ensure that the 30-Hour Famine Camp would run smoothly. It is indeed the first time I’m participating in such a large scale event and I believe it will be rewarding. We were brought to realization the state of poverty over 850 million people around the world are in. Through videos, games and talks, we were pulled out of our comfortable lives and zoomed in to feel, just for a moment, how these people living in poverty feels each day. Yet, I know that what we felt was nothing as compared to their reality.

30 Hour Famine is a global movement against hunger. Like what it implies, the camp participants forgo solid food for 30 hours. And because this year it is World Vision’s 10th anniversary in Malaysia, the Famine will be held in Bilingual (English and Chinese) for the first time. Previously 2000 participants attended the Chinese Famine Camp while about 600 attended the English Famine Camp. This time around, WV is targeting 5,000 participants.

Throughout the camp, participants will experience hunger pangs like never before. Nevertheless, that aside, participants will set to gain and understand deeper the lives of those less fortunate through activities like games, videos, quiz-shows and short-talks. Apart from that, there will also be a movie screening and a concert at night. Celebrities like Fish Leong, Daniel Lee, Nicholas Teo, Francissca Peter, Juwita Soweto and Sarimah Ibrahim are expected to grace the stage for a good cause. One thing is for sure, the participants will bring home a different perspective on life.

So often we talk about the hunger of the children of Africa. So nonchalantly we tend to say “Think of the kids in Africa” each time someone wastes their food. We know, we pity, yet we act not. Touching nearer to home, it is somewhat hard to believe that 16% of the people in Sabah are living in poverty. 21% of the children there are not given education. The next poorest state is Kelantan. Seeing how much our country has developed (with our 1st – 9th Malaysian Plans to eradicate poverty and all), it came as somewhat a surprise to me. These people mostly live in villages. Not many know about them, not many care enough to know.

The theme for this year’s 30 Hour Famine is ‘Hungry for Hope’.
What can you do to bring hope to the hungry?

If you would like to know more about the camp, or would like to participate, please direct your web browser to: 30 Hour Famine – Hungry for Hope

We wake up thinking what to eat.
They wake up thinking if they would eat.

Be grateful for all that you have.

Make a difference, today.

20 07 2007

It’s already the 20th day of the 7th month in the year two-thousand-seven.

As quick as a lightning bolt, we bade farewell to slightly more than half a year.

Now, as I take a moment to update my lifelog, I realize that time really sneaked by me and not once had I paused to reflect and ponder on how the year has been thus far.

I did not make any new year’s resolution this year as like most people, I’m not very good at making it come true. Therefore, as unambitious and unfocused as it’s gonna sound, I shall just say that I started the year without any goals or aim.

Nevertheless, along the way things do happen and obliviously, my goals for the year were formed. As I reflect on what I have achieved thus far, I gather that there is really nothing much yet and all the more I realize how short of a time I have. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Yet, I do not feel the urgency as of now. Thus making this point, pointless.

Anyway, am gonna highlight 10 of the events that impacted me one way or another. And I want to remember them (as insignificant as some may seem) when I look back in future. It took me quite awhile to recall as I am a Dory πŸ˜› :

1. I bought web hostings for 6 websites. Out of which I do not yet know what to do with 4 πŸ˜€ Any ideas?
2. I abseiled, played archery and camped for the first time in a freezing cold jungle – Genting.
3. I had a blast organizing the UOB MA Forum 2007 with my batch of MAs.
4. I was determined to make a difference in this world (heh) and volunteered for a charity event without my friends. Something I’ve never done. But am glad that 2 of my friends decided to join me later πŸ™‚
5. I had my hair cut to slightly above shoulder length. Something I last did 2 years ago.
6. I adopted my 3rd dog who was mistakenly named Princess. (Hantu sial!)

dsc05788.jpg

7. I managed to catch the Mix FM Mega Shopaholic.
8. I tried Carl’s Jr. and Ben and Jerry’s for the first time in Singapore πŸ˜› (too yummy not to highlight)
9. I felt first hand what it is like to be broke and in debt because of impulse shopping. LOL. I will make sure it never happens again πŸ˜€
10. Lotsa incidents took placed that made me realized how much stronger I’ve grown emotionally. And am beginning to grow spiritually too πŸ™‚

And the highlights I hope to see before the end of 2007:

1. Enlightening trip to Hong Kong, Macau and KK.
2. Satisfaction from having participate in the biggest 30-hr famine event ever organized.
3. A completion and a breakthrough in my ‘project’.
4. A rewarding increment upon confirmation πŸ˜€
5. A positive change in the condition of a close-relative.
6. Debt-free πŸ™‚

Biggest lessons learned so far:
1. There is no price-tag to friendship.
2. Be grateful even in the littlest thing.

All things are possible with God! πŸ™‚

Cheers!

Real Girl by Mutya Buena

14 07 2007

To live with no regrets of the Past. To cherish every second of Today. To embrace Tomorrow with hope and faith.

I present you, Real Girl by Mutya Buena, who was once part of SugarBabes.

If I had one chance to
In my life again
I wouldn’t make no changes
Now or way back when (yeah)
And if everything turns out
The way I hope it goes
But I cant wait to find out
What it is that God knows

But I don’t wanna think about
What’s gonna come around for me
I’ll just take it day by day
‘Cause it’s the only way
To be the best that I can be

I never pretend to be something I’m not
You get what you see, when you see what I’ve got
We live in the real world, I’m just a real girl
I know exactly where I stand

And all I can do is be true to myself
I don’t need permission from nobody else
‘Cause this is the real world, I’m not a little girl
I know exactly who I am

And nothing’s ever perfect
There’s no guarantee
And if I knew the answers
It would put my mind at ease (no)
So I’ll just keep on going
The way I’ve gone so far
And maybe I’ll end up
Tryin’ to catch a fallin star (yeah)

But I don’t wanna think about
What’s gonna come around for me
I’ll just take it day by day
‘Cause it’s the only way
To be the best that I can be

I never pretend to be something I’m not
You get what you see, when you see what I’ve got
We live in the real world, I’m just a real girl
I know exactly where I stand

And all I can do is be true to myself
I don’t need permission from nobody else
‘Cause this is the real world, I’m not a little girl
I know exactly who I am

Baby this is who I am
Don’t need you to understand
‘Cause everything is right where it should be
It wont be long til you know about me,
‘Cause I don’t give a…
Even when I’m out of love
‘Cause everythings just how it should be
And it wont be long till you know about me

I never pretend to be something I’m not
You get what you see, when you see what I’ve got
We live in the real world, I’m just a real girl
I know exactly where I stand

And all I can do is be true to myself
I don’t need permission from nobody else
‘Cause this is the real world, I’m not a little girl
I know exactly who I am

I never pretend to be something I’m not
You get what you see, when you see what I’ve got
We live in the real world, I’m just a real girl
I know exactly where I stand

And all I can do is be true to myself
I don’t need permission from nobody else
‘Cause this is the real world, I’m not a little girl
I know exactly who I am

Transformers transformed my mind on Transformers

12 07 2007

Ahhh so I’ve finally got myself updated. It’s like the ‘Transformers’ movie is a mandatory entry in every blog I visited since the movie was launched. No surprise that every entry relating to the Transformers are nothing but praises. Coz indeed, it was one heck of a cool show! That said, I would have enjoyed it more had I chosen a better time to watch the movie than after a long day at work. Coz I fell zzz for a couple of minutes prior to the discovery of the Cube. Sigh. I need to re-watch.

Nevertheless, from someone who said she had no interest in the show prior to the launch, and being adamant that she dislikes those ugly looking machines despite the guys going ‘goo-goo-gaa-gaa’ over it, I was transformed and decided to give the movie a shot after hearing everyone around me coo-ing over it!

As much as I know of the cartoon Transformers from during my childhood days, somehow, I was never much of a fan. Will it shock you that I did not know who Optimus Prime was? Heh. But now I do. And Optimus Prime is my second favourite after Bumble Bee!! How can anyone dislike Bumble Bee… so good looking as a car and as a Transformer. Not to mention, his heart is one made of gold. And after the movie, on my way home, I kept imagining and expecting the cars around me to transform πŸ˜€

Damn good looking right?

Funny yet sick?

9 07 2007

I can only imagine the horror this baby will express when he view this video in 15 years time. Got this video off Barry‘s blog. I really pity his cousin. But it sure is humorous! Well, at least the dog is very adorable. LOL.
